Mythtv is an amazing product for turning your xbox in to a home built PVR system, the downside is the Xbox is not powerful enough for having it do the recording or the streaming of your tv shows. This guide will help you through configuring the xbox as a front end "Viewer" to your already in place Myth TV System.

This guide assumes you have your xbox on a network, behind a router and your router has a ip subset of 192.168.1.1  (and is serving ips of 192.168.1.*)

Step 1>> Download Xebian 1.1.0 from the sourceforge website (we can not install Linux on your Xbox with out it!)

This release works well with Mythtv, and is easy to setup and get going.

download this file, extract it with a program like WinRAR to your desktop. Inside the folder 1.1.0-xbox you will have an ISO file named 1.1.0-xbox.iso. This file will need to be burned to either a CDRW or a DVDR. My xbox is a 1.0 version, and has a thompson drive in it. So it doesnt read regular cdr's, but it will read DVDR's. I used a program called 120% Alcohol  (http://www.alcohol-software.com/) to burn it to DVD.

After it has been burned to the dvd put it in your xbox's DVD drive, and either boot to the DVD - or if you have a dashboard select Launch DVD (the dashboard should show the dvd up as a game dvd)

Once this dvd has been loaded up, you will have a debian desktop on your tv.

now what we need to do now is a little bit of configuring to get your computer talking directly with the xbox. By default the xbox is on the subnet of 192.168.0.1, my network was using the subnet of 192.168.1.1 - so we need to change your ip address, the easiest way of doing this in windows xp is to go to the control panel, open up network connections,

double click on Local Area connection and click properties in that window.

find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)  in the white box, and double click it.

select the use the following ip address box, and fill in

IP address : 192.168.0.100

netmask: 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 192.168.0.1

and click ok, and ok on the window behind this. This will set your computers ip to 192.168.0.1 (which is now on the same subnet as the xbox)
